Focusing on Faces in Theology of Art

by Sister Hilda Kleiman, OSB

In our third day dedicated to working with our sketchbooks in Theology of Art at Mount Angel Seminary, we worked with drawing the stylized Byzantine facial features for traditional Orthodox icons.  Since the face or faces are the most important part of an icon, no other feature in the icon should detract from their beauty.

Before we started drawing, I invited the students to include the verse Mark 10:21 in the day's mediation:
Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing.  Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.

As we worked, we also listened to liturgical music from The Rudder, a part of the Orthodox Christian Network.
