Identifying Figures from the Synogogue of Dura Europos

by Sister Hilda Kleiman, OSB

In our class session on Jewish, Early Christian, and Byzantine Art in History of Art at Mount Angel Seminary, we focus part of our time on the paintings from the Synagogue of Dura Europos.  This synagogue stands out since its paintings do not avoid depicting the human figure.

As in our time with the Vienna Genesis, we tested whether our knowledge of Scripture was sufficient to identify the scenes and figures portrayed in the paintings.

Moses Brought Out of the River

Hebrews Fleeing Egypt

Crossing of the Red Sea

Worshiping the Golden Calf

Samuel Anointing David
