The Arcs of the Discus Thrower

by Sister Hilda Kleiman, OSB

The Discus Thrower is one of the works we discuss in the portion of History of Art at Mount Angel Seminary dedicated to Western art and architecture.  It is a primary example of Classical Greek scuplture; its unity is grounded in the formation of two arcs.  The first arc runs from the back of the head to the back of the left heel, and the second runs from one hand to the other.
