Bright Friday and the Life-Giving Spring

by Sister Hilda Kleiman, OSB

In the Orthodox Church, the Week after Easter is referred to as Bright Week, and Bright Friday commemorates the image of the Theotokos, the Mother of God, of the Life-Giving Source, the Life-Giving Spring.

The image centers on the Mother of God with Christ in her arms and standing within a beautiful fountain, a symbol of life and health.  The other figures around the base of the fountain drink and bathe with its healing waters.

Rejoice, inexhaustible sources of life, shed thy grace,
font of remedies that maketh the power of illness weak and vain.
