Looking at Paintings with the Getty

by Sister Hilda Kleiman, OSB

This piece from the video gallery of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles gives a concise introduction to how painters use composition, perspective, depth, color, light, and texture to direct the viewer's attention.  The artists featured include Cezanne, Renoir, and Van Gogh.

Toward the end of the video, the commentator also includes a good point about comparing different artists.  Their work may differ because of deliberate choices concerning the emphasis each artist wanted in his or her work rather than differing because one painter was more skilled than another.
